What this is
Free College Essay Grader is an independent essay evaluation tool for students applying to US colleges. You paste a draft, choose the essay type and optionally the exact prompt. The review returns a score out of 100, six dimension scores, verbatim evidence from your essay and a ranked revision plan.
It is a feedback tool, not a writing service. The report does not generate replacement paragraphs or a finished essay. The revision has to be yours.
Who runs it
This is an independent project run by a small team. We are not affiliated with Common App, the University of California, the College Board or any university or admissions office.
We do not have former admissions officers on staff, and we do not claim an external advisory board. The rubric is internally developed from public admissions guidance and established writing-evaluation practice. We publish the full methodology so you can judge the rubric instead of taking a credential on faith.
We will not invent a team to look larger than we are. If we add external reviewers, we will publish their verified background, the sections they reviewed and the date.
Why we built it
Most essay feedback falls into one of two traps. It is either too vague to act on — “make it more personal” — or it rewrites the essay in a voice that is not the student’s. Both fail the same test: after the feedback, the student still does not know what the reader noticed or what to change.
We wanted a third option: a structured score, quoted evidence and a revision plan that keeps the student’s voice. That is why the report quotes your sentences, explains what the reader hears and asks a coaching question instead of writing the fix for you.
What we do
- Apply a published six-dimension rubric with weights that change by essay type.
- Quote the draft for every dimension and verify that the quote exists before showing it.
- Calculate the total on our server from the six dimension scores, so the number cannot drift from the breakdown.
- Keep free and paid reviews on the same scoring standard. Payment unlocks depth, not a different score.
- Explain the limits: the score is writing feedback, not an admissions prediction.
What we do not do
- We do not write or rewrite your essay.
- We do not predict admission or sell an “admission probability.”
- We do not claim to detect AI-written essays. AI detectors produce false positives and do not prove authorship.
- We do not sell personal information.
- We do not publish fabricated testimonials, student names, admission results or university logos.
- We do not claim a university partnership or institutional endorsement.
Privacy in one paragraph
To generate the review, your essay is sent to DeepSeek’s API. DeepSeek’s privacy policy states that it may use inputs to improve and train its models, retains data as necessary and processes data in China. We do not use your essay to train our own models, and we do not sell it. Do not submit information you would not want processed by a third-party AI provider. The privacy policy explains the processing, retention and deletion in full.
